George was larger than life. His joy in spending time with his family, especially his daughter (which is what I was most privy to), was obvious to anyone around. He had an infectious laugh and always managed to keep me on my toes with his wit and humor.
One of my favorite memories of George happened during the beach wedding reception for Ericka and Jeremy. The entire celebration, from wedding to cookout, seemed to fill him with the kind of happiness we all strive for. You could catch him gazing around at his family and friends with a look on his face that said, “There is nowhere I would rather be and no one I would rather be spending it with.” He was quite proud of his daughter, rightfully so, and it showed in every grin that burst across his face.
That day on the beach, I was trying (unsuccessfully) to get George to dance along with me to the hours-long party playlist when he started storytelling. Cigar in hand, he had me rolling with laughter as he described his favorite San Diego beachgoer - a very patriotic, minimally clothed bicyclist who appeared each summer. I was convinced that he created this gentleman in his imagination just to entertain us. When George later spotted him riding down the sidewalk, his booming voice carried across the sand and we all turned to witness. What a sight!
George reveled in the joy of living, and I will forever be grateful for the way he and Cheryl welcomed me at every opportunity. I feel blessed to have known him. He will be missed beyond measure, but his smile and legacy will carry on through his family.

A candle has been lit for my brother. A light in our family, that has gone out, way too soon.
