Obituary of Charles Berry Winborne

Charles “Chip” Berry Winborne III, PhD passed away peacefully from an illness at his home in Sedona on June 22, 2015. He was 66 years old. The surviving members of “The Sunshine Family” - his wife Sandra and daughters Vanessa and Chelsea – were at his bedside to say a loving, “Good-bye and peace be upon you.” Born and raised in southern California, Dr. Winborne and family moved to Sedona in 1981, then spent nearly two years on Maui before returning permanently to Sedona in 1985. A solid oak-of-a-man with many branches, he held an M. A. and PhD in Education, authored two books, designed and hand built two homes, produced numerous paintings and drawings, designed and supervised a first-generation virtual school for migrant students, and was a life-long student of the “science of becoming oneself”. He admired R. Buckminster Fuller, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Bill Moyers, and Christiane Amanpour. His passions were the nurturing of “authentic interest” in everyone and making education free to all. To his family, Chip was a devoted, loving, wise Superman – able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. To his friends, Chip was a buddy, confidante, big thinker, and sometimes counselor who could always be counted on to help anyone in need. He was preceded in death by his mother Irene Winborne, father Charles Berry Winborne, Jr., and brother Douglas Winborne. In addition to his wife and two daughters, Dr. Winborne is survived by his brother Wayne Winborne, sister Karen Winborne Noyer, seven grandchildren, and an extended family of in-laws/out-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date to honor Chip and his passion for global education – End of Ignorance.
