We just found out about Pat's passing and are sorry for your loss. We met her in 1995 and she sold us our first property in Sedona, then came to our wedding in 1996.

My Mom was one of a kind. She was a much-loved fixture in the Verde Valley since 1958 when I started the first grade. My Dad worked road construction and once we started school, they wanted us to go to school and stay in one place and that place was Cottonwood, AZ. I was Pat Wood's daughter; her name was my calling card for many years. Everyone that met her loved her, my friends, people that hardly knew her, and the people she worked with. She started working at Robinson's clothing store in downtown Cottonwood when my youngest sister started school. Then was a partner in S-S Ranchwear for many years and wrote articles, sold ads, and edited for rodeo newspaper. She then went on to be a much-loved relator in the Sedona area. She had mad Mom skills, she sewed, making many of my formals and western wear for my siblings making most of her own patterns. She baked the best cakes, cookies, and pies. she taught me how to bake and my pies are pretty good as well. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She taught me everything I know about horses. The horses ate and were groomed before we were (lol). I will miss her like there is no tomorrow; she was our rock!

I have a lot of childhood memories of spending time with my Grandma including some near death experiences on horses (kiddingnotkidding), and also some heart-pounding off-road adventures (ahem, cliffhangers) to show us what her latest 4-runner was, um, capable of. I also remember loving to stay the night with her when she’d let me climb the haystacks in the barn using hay hooks that resembled slasher movie murder weapons, and then take a long walk in the pitch dark blackness of night with no flashlight. Sometimes she’d make chocolate yummies (no-bake cookies), and then later always fell asleep in her chair inevitably tipping her fully-caffeinated black coffee that was balanced on her knee. She was ornery and tough-skinned, funny and obnoxiously sarcastic at times, but I think some of this was to hide how deeply sensitive she really was. I am pretty sure like me that she loved animals more than people, but as a real estate agent for many years she could talk the ears off almost any random stranger. She adored native jewelry and was never seen wearing less than what you see in this pic, usually a lot more. She was one of the hardest working people I know, whether it was slinging fancy properties dressed to the nines in Sedona, or weeding the pastures in a tank top and jeans. She was impossibly late for almost everything. She loved the desert with every fiber of her being and could never understand why I left. I regret not seeing her one last time. Sorry to be so cliché, but hold your people close because you never know when you might never see them again. Grams, I hope you’ve been reunited in some other dimension with your long-term partner Pete. I’m sure he’s been waiting for you with open arms and fancy dancing boots on his feet.

I am so very sad to learn of Pat's passing away and my most heartfelt condolences go out to her family. My family sure loved and appreciated Pat for the love and companionship she gave to our uncle, Pete Shill. At family reunions and get togethers, his eyes would light up when she was near and his signature dry sense of humor was that much better and he laughed more. We could see how happy she helped him be. If there is a dance floor in heaven, I am sure they are having a great time. - Ben Bueler
