I met Bill in 1973 when we were both first year teachers at Shea Middle School. He remained a good friend until he passed. We had a group of young male teachers at Shea that became very good friends, close to each other and close to our students. Bill was soon dubbed "The Purple Haze", and known to us all for the rest of his life simply as "Purp." We had many friendly battles on the sports fields, track, tennis courts, and at the poker table, and I basically laughed my way through my 20's, thanks in large part to Purp's amazing and outrageous sense of humor. He was smart, a good athlete, compassionate toward others, had unique insights into history and politics, was a true character, and was a big positive and joyful influence in my life. He will be greatly missed.

I showed up at Shea Middle School in the fall of 1977 to begin 30 years there. There was a core group of male veteran teachers including Bill Hazen who were a big influence on a rookie teacher/coach including a lot of great practical jokes and “hazings”— not to be confused with “Hazens”. What a good man Bill was and he was a long distance runner which made me like and admire him even more. He let me shadow him while he coached the Middle School Cross Country Team which left me in a great place to take over when he moved to Horizon. I missed him a lot when he went to the Horizon staff. Bill was a mentor, friend, and a fine man. My very best to the Hazen family.

I was a secretary at Horizon High School where Bill was a teacher in the Social Studies Department. I remember his pleasant demeanor and how he went above and beyond to participate on trips with his kids. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

We will all miss the purple haze. He was an excellent teacher and wonderful friend and colleague. A favorite teacher of his students in his A.P. History classes. Always know for his keen since of humor in the classroom and on the golf course. Lots of great memories.

Very sorry to hear of Bill Hazen passing. I was in the Social Studies department with Bill and have many fond memories of him. Bill was a great guy! His students loved him and so did the staff. He was truly a nice man and a fun man to be around. Horizon High School was a better place because of him!
